Choral directing history
Marie has worked as an organist and music director across the mid-Atlantic east coast for almost twelve years. Marie is an award-winning choral composer, with a deep passion for writing technical and performative works for the ensembles she works with. In 2023, Marie won the International Federation of Choral Music's Composition Competition, with her SSA piece "A Jellyfish." That piece was then performed by ensembles in the United States such as TellTale Opera in Baltimore, and the piece was workshopped in Beijing for the China International Choral Festival in 2024. This same piece went on to being published by North Star Music in their Duets and More anthology. This piece was written to be a technical and ear training piece for young, developing treble voices, and has been workshopped and performed by developing as well as fully developed treble voices.
Marie is the former head of the music department at Saint Timothy's School in Stevenson, Maryland, where she directed the treble ensemble, Moongates. Her experience with young and developing voices began when she would assist her middle and high school choral directors by leading class during their absence since she has always had piano skills and could repeat her teachers' warm ups on piano without hesitation. Marie has studied choral and orchestral conducting under Dr. Rodney Wynkoop, Dr. Edward Polochick, Dr. Daniel Aune, Dr. Harlan Parker, Dr. Adam Waller, and Dr. Richard Disharoon, all through instruction at Duke University, Peabody Conservatory, and/or private instruction.
She is currently a member of the American Guild of Organists as part of the Baltimore, Cumberland Valley, and Annapolis chapters, as well as the American Choral Directors Association, and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians.
Marie has played in more than ten churches during her time as an organist, and in those churches she has done substitute work, choir directing work, cantor work, handbell choir directing work, and choir + instrumental ensemble work. When working in Baltimore city, Marie has been the music director of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Epiphany Lutheran Church, and Govans Presbyterian Church. Marie's active composition work thrives in the churches she works for; she has written more than 80 organ pieces in her time as a church musician including arrangements and orchestral transcriptions, following in the footsteps of her former organ teacher, Jeremy Filsell. Marie has also written many choral pieces, both featured by the Epiphany and Govans Chancel choirs. Marie currently runs a concert series at Govans, which hosts a residency for musicians who are a part of the series. Musicians who receive a residency are featured in church services, written about in the newsletter, and perform multiple concerts throughout the season. Conducting the Handbell ensemble on Maundy Thursday, 2023
My Choirs
Marie has been directing the Govans Chancel Choir and the Govans Handbell Choir since April, 2022. The Govans Chancel Choir is a semi-professional adult ensemble composed of paid professional singers, retired professional singers, and volunteer singers who also sing in prestigious choral ensembles locally.
Since beginning working this ensemble, Marie has performed a number of impressive choral works such as Handel's Messiah, Susa's Carols and Lullabies, Gjeilo's Dark Night of the Soul, Saint-Saëns's Oratorio de Noël, and Bonds' Credo, just to name a few.
The Govans Handbell Choir is an all volunteer ensemble with no age limits; all members rotate in and out of a mini ensemble called the Govans Handbell Quartet, and a few of these ringers are also members of the local prestigious ensemble, Charm City Bronze.
